1. intro
This unit is designed to deepen your understanding of the critical and cultural contexts for research-based practice in digital and new media art.
It explores a range of concepts and themes associated with digital art, focusing on developments in digital technology that have a large impact on teaching, learning and creative production within higher education.
This will involve examining social networking tools for working collaboratively in an online environment, and the impact of this for digital and new media art research practices.

2. aims
The unit sets out to promote the link between critical study and creative practice and to enable you to:
• Understand concepts and themes underpinning digital and new media art practices
• Develop a critical framework for studying digital and new media
• Establish a relationship between theory and practice
• Explore interdisciplinary practices and hybrid art forms
• Facilitate the development of research strategies

3. learning outcomes
By the end of the unit you be able to demonstrate:
• An understanding of the implications of social computing tools on artistic practice and research
• An awareness of a range of research-based interdisciplinary practices and hybrid art forms
• An understanding of theoretical approaches appropriate to defining, analysing and making digital art
• The ability to independently compare and contrast different forms of digital art

4. transferrable skills
you will have the opportunity to develop:
• Written communication skills appropriate to academic study
• Oral communication skills through group discussion
• Skills in detailed observation and analysis
• Online communication skills appropriate for networking and collaborative working

5. teaching and learning pattern
The unit will be taught via lectures, seminars, and case studies/workshops. Students are expected to spend approximately 7 hours a week on independent study, research and seminar presentation.
